Labor Day weekend is set aside to honor all those brave and dedicated workers who fought for a 40-hour week, work-place safety, and the right to unionize & collectively bargain for fair wages and working conditions. More recently, the actual calendar observance of Labor Day has marked the shift in natural seasons from Summer to Fall, as children return to school, daily natural light decreases, and some moments of cool temperatures begin to show up with increasing regularity. For those of us in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, it also portends the coming of “Leaf Season”–when the northern forests begin to change color from various shades of green to a vibrant explosion of reds, yellows, browns, and oranges. In Ironwood, the best place to catch a wide glimpse of this change is to drive to the top of Mt. Zion, out by Gogebic Community College, walk out onto the observation platform, and take in that vast vista of Fall color vibrancy. You can get a partial glimpse (and follow the changes!) by clicking on our Chamber website’s “Mt. Zion Webcam”. Fall in the U.P. is a very special time to experientially enter into the passage of the seasons!
